What is an ITIN?
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS to individuals who need to file taxes but are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN).ITIN Application Process
- Determine Eligibility:
You need an ITIN if you are a non-resident or resident alien, their spouse, or a dependent who cannot get an SSN but must file a U.S. tax return.
- Complete Form W-7
- Gather Supporting Documents
Submit documents proving your identity and foreign status. Examples include:
- Passport (best choice, as it proves both identity and foreign status)
- National ID card
- Birth certificate (for dependents)
- U.S. visa
- Submit the ApplicationYou can submit the Form W-7 along with your completed tax return and supporting documents by: Applying in person at IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs)
- Wait for ProcessingThe IRS usually processes ITIN applications in 7 weeks, but it may take longer during peak seasons.
- Receive ITIN:
Once approved, the IRS will send your ITIN by mail. You can then use it for tax filing purposes.
